Thirty Two
First, the big news: I got married this year through Texas common law:
When we were dating, my then-girlfriend would often ask about my plans for the future. I would answer to the best of my ability, but I always ended by saying I am a bad predictor. From starting figure skating in my twenties to trading the markets (stock and futures), even just the past few years have been filled with major life pivots. This year was no exception, building upon the foundation I hinted at in last year’s post but also containing new twists of its own.
Figure Skating
I decided to fully quit skating this year. Most of my free time is in the evenings, but the rinks here do not have consistent evening skates due to hockey games / practice. I hope to return to this activity someday as there is nothing quite like the physics of ice skating. I leave this section with a copy of my favorite skating montage:
Changing Lives
I started a new project that is likely to define the rest of my 30s: Creating a roadmap for how a person could theoretically transition from poverty level to increasingly higher socioeconomic levels in America. The new businesses I set up this year are part of this project. I have already succeeded in training folks in my pilot group:
I aim to continue to change lives as I develop this project further. For personal safety, I will not be divulging detailed information about the project here.
Digital Creations
I am still working on the same two projects as in 2022:
Unnamed Warships Deckbuilding Roguelike
My team spent most of this year working on a shipyard scene and an island scene, the latter of which is still being optimized. One of my recent bittersweet realizations is that I have so many businesses that I do not have ample free time to do the game design anymore. For the first time ever, I have hired a pair of game designers to tackle the design side while I focus on the business and financial aspects.
Other than some UI changes in Figma, there was no progress on Zems this year since my focus was on the warships project.
Magic: the Gathering
I didn’t work on any decks this year because I was focusing on my new businesses and community. I will probably not be working on any new decks next year, so moving forward I am going to exclude this section.
Health & Fitness
This is the first year my doctor told me my cholesterol is above ideal and to lose a few pounds. I attribute the issues to a few reasons:
- I quit skating and I have not yet replaced it with another activity that is more evening-hours friendly.
- My ballet teacher had a child, so those lessons stopped.
- My wife and I have not been consistently practicing dance during the Sunday socials, despite taking dance lessons once a week. This is because most of our free time goes into our businesses.
I still work out with my personal trainer and off-ice coach once a week. I do strength training with the former and flexibility exercises with the latter. As I get older, I increasingly realize the need to work on both.
Regarding my diet, I am currently counting calories (roughly) to stay at a calorific deficit to slowly lose weight. Most of our meals come from Factor since we found a way to make it cheaper than even grocery shopping. As for new restaurants, one we discovered this year is Ten Seconds Noodle, which replaced the restaurant I mentioned in last year’s post (it shut down in the middle of the year).
My wife and I recognize the need to add more exercise into our lives to balance the time spent on our businesses. Our first priority as we head into the new year is to explore and eventually commit to a new physical activity. This will most likely be climbing so we can strengthen muscles that typically become under-worked after long periods in front of a computer, but we will see.
Entertainment Favorites
Show
Likely an unpopular opinion since Season 1 was only “decent” and the series as a whole has alienated readers of the books, but I was impressed with The Wheel of Time Season 2. I think it presents a loosely adapted but still-compelling story with multiple character arcs. The only hesitation I have with this approach is that it has been done before with Game of Thrones, and that show became progressively worse after they ran out of source material. In this case, the show is trying to weave a life of its own – will it get worse after it leaves the books, similar to The Witcher?
Other shows we watched this year:
- Avatar: The Last Airbender (Live Netflix Adaptation)
- Warrior (Seasons 1 & 2; the show lost its plot in season 3 and we couldn’t finish it)
- All the Light We Cannot See
- Fallout Season 1
- The Brothers Sun Season 1
- The Gentlemen
- Arcane Season 2 (wished it had additional budget for more episodes so the ending didn’t seem as rushed)
Movie
We watched 22 movies this year:
1. Dune: Part Two
2. The Man in the Iron Mask
3. Quest for Camelot
4. Challengers
5. When Marnie Was There
6. Arrietty
7. The Iron Giant
8. Heat
9. Oppenheimer
10. Mean Girls (2004)
11. American Fiction
12. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
13. The Cat Returns
14. Whisper of the Heart
15. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)
16. Goodfellas
17. The Boy and the Heron
18. Jason Bourne
19. Inside Out 2
20. Good Will Hunting
21. The First Slam Dunk
22. RRR
Dune is my favorite science fiction novel, so I was curious if Denis Villeneuve would be able to give it a proper adaptation. I believe he did a stellar job, even modernizing characters like Chani and Lady Jessica to act as foils to Paul, in contrast to their book counterparts. If you’re reading this in the USA, you likely have already seen the movie since it is one of the biggest hits of the year.
While I feel compelled to pick Dune Part Two because of the original novel’s influence on my childhood, there were a number of great movies we saw this year that deserve a watch if you have not seen them:
- When Marnie Was There – The second-highest animated film of its year (just behind Inside Out). It’s a movie about trauma and learning to forgive yourself and those around you.
- Heat – This movie has influenced so many people that I’m not sure it needs mentioning. It has a lot of themes and many of history’s major robberies used this movie in their “research.”
- RRR – An epic film exploring the idea of what might happened if two major figures from India’s history had met in real life. Almost was my choice for best movie I saw this year. Go see it if you want to experience a historically-inspired epic.
- American Fiction – A masterpiece satirical comedy film.
- The Boy and the Heron – Miyazaki’s last film, which took a lot of thinking and research for met to understand. It’s a meta film that is worth a watch if you’ve seen his other works and also have read about his life.
Book
I read 14 books this year:
1. Trading Price Action Trading Ranges (Brooks)
2. Building Winning Algorithmic Trading Systems
3. Kaufman Constructs Trading Systems
4. The Logic of Failure
5. Trading Price Action Reversals (Brooks)
6. The Psychology of Money (Housel)
7. How to Be a Capitalist Without Any Capital (Latka)
8. How I Built This (Raz)
9. Atomic Habits (Clear)
10. 12 Rules for Life (Peterson)
11. Candlestick and Pivot Point Trading Triggers, Second Edition (Person)
12. Learn to Trade (Kaufman)
13. Multiple Streams of Income, 2nd Ed (Allen)
14. The Man Who Solved the Market: How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution (Zuckerman)
I was torn between Atomic Habits and The Psychology of Money for my favorite read of the year. Ultimately, I gave Atomic Habits the slight edge because of how much I resonate with the idea that we do not rise to the level of our goals but instead fail to the level of our systems. However, both are worth a read.
Song
Linkin Park has emerged after their 7-year hiatus. What else is there to say for the Alternative Rock genre? Such an emotional comeback.
We went to one concert this year too: Cyndi Lauper’s last tour.
Video Game
I played 6 new video games this year:
1. 112 Operator
2. Tales of Arise
3. Pyre
4. Dishonored 2
5. Across the Obelisk
6. X-Morph: Defense
I’ve played every Supergiant game since their first release (Bastion) and I love how the studio has evolved with time. Sadly, Pyre is a game hardly anyone has played because it does not have the same marketing and mass-market appeal as Hades, but the game was crucial for them to make in order to improve upon the formula for Hades. I do agree the gameplay gets a bit stale over time since it’s a fantasy sports game, but the writing kept me going to the end.
Board Game
I played 9 new board games this year:
1. Dune: Imperium – Uprising
2. Wonderland’s War: Shards of Madness
3. Eos: Island of Angels
4. Legacy of Thracks: The Awakening
5. Arcs
6. Kinfire Chronicles: Night’s Fall
7. Bantam West
8. Age of Galaxy
9. Daybreak
For my pick of the year, I was torn between this and Dune Imperium: Uprising. Uprising boldly presents a revamped design without being afraid of controversy, especially in the way players were confused by whether it was a sequel or a remake. There isn’t an easy way to categorize it, which is why I’m so impressed by its release. On the other hand, Kinfire Chronicles might just be the best-designed board game campaign I’ve played since Pandemic Legacy Season 1. While it does not have as much depth as Gloomhaven, it is not lacking in that department while offering a streamlined approach to campaign set-up and tear-down. It also uses standees rather than minis, which I like because minis are becoming more of the ‘product’ in this industry recently rather than actually making good games.
Travel
We traveled to two places this year: Orlando, FL and three cities in China. The former was for a friend’s wedding and the latter was to visit my family in Asia since my wife had never met them.
The last time I visited Orlando was for a Force of Will TCG tournament where myself and 2 other contestants drove from Oklahoma City to Orlando non-stop (a 21 hour drive). I didn’t get to explore the city during that trip, so I took the opportunity this time. It turns out, Disney and Universal Studios basically share ownership of it!
I was born in China and moved to the US in 1996. I previously visited the country in 2007 and 2017, mainly visiting my hometown (Nanjing) to see family and Beijing to tour landmarks. Since this was my wife’s first time, we went to Beijing to see the Great Wall:
We also visited the Forbidden City Palace:
Alongside Beijing, we also visited Xi’An, which is where the Terracotta Warriors are:
The last thing we did in China was return to Nanjing and do a photoshoot in traditional attire to celebrate our marriage:
In Summary: Expectancy -> Automation -> Scale
This cycle was my focus for the year. I hinted at opportunities in my conclusion of last year’s post and this year has seen some of them come to fruition but not yet at scale. My goal next year is to scale one business, automate and expand another, and lastly, introduce a few new ones as well. These are all part of my life-changing roadmap project. Just like last year, I intend to remain vague for my personal safety. The future is compounding, so stay tuned 😉
